________

In the 1960s glassmaking started to be taught in many American schools specializing in arts, crafts and design. Independent glass artists began working in small studio environments, a movement which would become to be known as Studio Glass. They sought to free themselves from the usual constraints, including commercial pressure. American artist Dale Chihuly, who had previously studied interior architecture, was awarded a research grant to make glass in Venice. His works demonstrate a consummate mastery of Venetian glassmaking techniques and colour, ranging from decorative objects to monumental installations. Oft-repeated organic forms make up series such as “Baskets” (1977–1979), “Seaforms” (1980) and “Macchia” (1981).
