Susana Soares, a designer born in Lisbon, explores the links between design, nature, science and technology. Her project Bee’s (2007–2009) is a system of diagnosis using a glass vessel and bees as ‘bio-detectors’. Hymenoptera can detect in human breath the markers of various diseases – tuberculosis, lung and skin cancers, diabetes – as they travel through the diagnosis chamber. This procedure requires the bees to be trained beforehand.
